Careless Writing Skills Could Be A Deal Breaker

Studies have revealed that poor writing skills can be a deal breaker at work during a job. It can persist to be a panicking problem through out the job. Good writing skills are more important all over in the work place. If you think you are only being evaluated on your resume and cover letter, you are kidding yourself. Hiring managers are evaluating every piece of correspondence you send them-even that very first e-mail.

In modern scenario, e-mail has taken the place of telephone calls as a primary form of communication. It is easy and efficient; however it can pose major problems for poor writers.

E-mail while quickest way of correspondence, can be annoying to carry since a long e-mail ‘conversation', could be boring. To avoid this many people; trying to draw details or clarification out of some one who does not write well in the first place ,use e-mail as their solution. E-mail mistakes live on. It is much harder to correct a mistake made in writing than it is to correct something said on the phone. Here are few tips that one can utilize when face such challenge.

Obviously, no one is born with qualities that Word worth possess however there are some steps one can take to become a better writer.

Organization of thoughts:

Reflecting on what you want to say before you pick up a pen or hit the key board will ensure that you stay on track. It is suggested that you use note cards to organize the thoughts. Write notes on your cards then organize them and use them to make an outline of the passage.

Lose the jargons:

Using lots of syllables on the latest buzzwords doesn't necessarily translate to good or intelligent writing .The best way is to explain things in the simplest, most direct way as possible.

Learn by example:

Read a few good novels and other business books to show you how others write .Notice the style that managers and executives at your company use in their writing.

Practice and Practice more:

Write as much as you can, whether its letters to friends or a daily journal entry. The more you write, the better you learn to express yourself. Use proper grammar and capitalization of words and use of punctuations.

Don't let the bad habits you have picked up from instant messaging your friends creep into professional correspondence. Edit ,edit and edit again .Make sure you proof read ,very carefully and have someone who writes well. Take a look at your work for revision before sending.

I agree; nothing is worse than working for someone who cannot use grammar or punctuation properly. During my working career, proofreading and editing have always been included in my job descriptions and I never hesitated to assist anyone asking for help. But how does a supervisor rise to that position without his or her own good writing skills? ;)
