Enjoying an Ancient but Rich ES MERCADEL in MENORCA

Es Mercadal is only 9km northwest of the town Alaior. It is an ancient market town located at the island's center where the hills are.

Es Mercadal is full of white painted homes with antique quaint watercourses. You can enjoy great tasty Menorcan food at its world class restaurant called the Can Aguedet. There is a simple hotel for your living comfort while holidaying in Es Mercadel which offers clean and comfortable amenities.

Landscape Beauty

It is possible to enjoy the natural beauty that can be found in Es Mercadel by going on the path from Monte Toro to its summit which is also the highest peak on the island.

The 3.2km climb is refreshing with a spectacular view of the entire island on a clear day. This vantage point of Menerca showcases its reddish sandstone Devonian rock at the north with a rolling landscape and a ragged coastline with sparse population. Its south is dominated by limestone formations in the vast plain which is the most fertile farmland for the island before it reaches the valleys.

Historical Significance

Es Mercadel has a lot of historical significance with Monte Toro as a pilgrimage spot since the medieval era. It was the Augustinians who built an impressive monastery right at the peak of Monte Toro in the 17th century.

There are some remnants of the original architectural available for viewing at the monastery which has now been converted partly to an army outpost but a remaining statue of the Christ still stands in its midst. Quite a large part of the monastery is closed to visitors except for the well kept courtyard and a few gift shops set up to entice visitors. There is also a quaint terrace café located at the monastery for a bite if you are hungry. A little church stands close by which was a chapel in the ancient days.

Part of Spain

Although Es Mercadel may seem to be a small island of Spain, it is a natural beauty spot that is great for holidaymakers. It may not be the first and last time when you come to Spain or Es Mercadel. The beaches will entice you to come back for more; if not, the historical sights and culture.

There may be many great cities in Spain but remote spots like Es Mercadel offer more delights by bringing you closer to nature and history. You can also enjoy the local cuisines and wide space that gives you a true sense of freedom while at Es Mercadel.
