Water Flows Downhill

"Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation." (Romans 12:16).

It is amazing that the average person has to learn over and over again that water flows downhill. You would think that simply observing the destruction of others, reading books that clearly reveal failing types of personalities and observing the lives of those around us, that one could see what works in life and what does not.

Pride does not work. Pride is a major source of sin and is hated by God. All those who put pride first will be brought down low. It is 100% certain. The classic example of pride is Pharaoh of Egypt; "Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go." (Exodus 5:2).

This same type of pride was played out in boardrooms of companies that no longer exist. It was played out in politicians who had power temporarily, whose names we cannot now remember. And this type of pride is currently being displayed in schools, families, companies and neighborhoods throughout the world with equally destructive results.

Proverbs 18 - Teaches us today?

Proverbs 18:12 "(12) Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, But humility goes before honor."

Psalm 62:5-8 (Theme: No Other Hope). "(5) My soul wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. (6) He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken. (7) On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God. (8) Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out you heart before Him; God is a refuge for us."

Today's question. Why is pride so bad?

There are two major reasons. First, I have never seen anyone complemented because they had high pride in themselves. You don't see people saying; ‘I really admire your pride, how you put yourself first in everything, how you think of yourself as being even greater than God and what a wonderful pride role model you are for our children.' But on the contrary, prideful behavior really turns people off leading to the prideful person's failure.

The second reason is they will not have the assistance of God. It may appear they are being blessed, but follow them long enough and the result is always the same...destruction. Pride was the sin of Satan. God said; "Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; You corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. I cast you to the ground;" (Ezekiel 28:17).

But give thanks to God that do to His grace and forgiveness, he will turn his face back toward a person who changes his prideful ways and repent of this sin.

"Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself;" (Philippians 2:3).

Dear God, help me with my humility. Amen.
