There are many ways to train a dog, and it is important to be very clear on the vocal commands used during training. Your dog will get confused if he is told similar things which have many meanings.

For example, if you take commands like "Down" and "Off". It is absolutely necessary for you to know the differences in the meaning of the phrases "Down" and "Off". When you are training your dog to obey, obviously you would be using the command "Down" and teach the dog to lie down when the command is said.

When you want to sort out the problem of your dog jumping on you, don't say "Down" instead use the phrase "Off". Otherwise the dog will get confused. Even after being trained, if your dog still continues to jump on you, you will have to analyze the reasons why he does not stop jumping.

Would you like somebody greeting you looking elsewhere? Of course not, you would always want them to look at your face and greet you and so does your dog. Since he is short, he jumps at you to see your face. One thing which you have to do, in order to stop him jumping upon you is that you can get to his level by squatting a bit and greeting your dog.

While you squat, there is no necessity for your dog to jump up and see your face. Another thing what you can do is, when he jumps upon you, hold his front paws firmly away from you and tell him "OFF" clearly and loudly. When you do this and squat a little when you greet him, then there is no question of training him in a harsh way. And when he does follow your instructions properly, do not forget to give him a pat and appreciate him.

Always remember, that you have to praise your dog, for any kind of effort he takes to fulfill your command, though according to your version it is just a casual obedience. When you praise the dog or pat it, it is a sign of appreciation to the dog for being good.

If your dog is very stubborn, and if the above techniques do not work on him, then you have to be a little tougher and hard on him. You can try the knee-jerk reaction in this case. For example when your dog is trying to jump on you, quickly put our knee up, on his chest and loudly yell "OFF". You can even shove with the help of your knees. When you knock your dog down, the message will be conveyed quicker. It will help you to get off the aggression.
