Pete and Beth eventually welcomed Pete, Jr. into the family. Both Pete and Marilyn finished their degrees and looked forward to ending their tour on midnights. But before they could act on their change of shift, the Chief of Patrol promoted them both to Detective rank and assigned them to the Violent Crimes Unit at Police Headquarters-as partners.

Joe Murphy and Marilyn became inseparable, a serious relationship emerging from what had previously been two people adrift without an anchor. Marilyn convinced Joe to return to the police department where he continues to rise in the ranks.

Matthew Roberts graduated from high school and was accepted at the St. Xavier University Business School. Andy Devine made him a full-time employee at the shirt shop with full benefits, and promised to adjust his schedule so that Matthew wouldn't miss any classes.

Susan O'Hara and the boys were flown to Washington, D.C. to attend a ceremony honoring her fallen husband Joe. His name was inscribed on the Law Enforcement Memorial, along with over 18,000 other officers slain in the line of duty.
Sal Rosato began serving his sentence in Joliet State Prison and was stabbed to death by another inmate just six months into his incarceration. His girlfriend Sally was re-arrested for DUI and was sentenced to one year in the Cook County Jail.

Sanela Latarski was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Lt. Frank Borelli pulled some strings and had her immediately assigned to his unit.
