While many school districts implement school uniforms to help eliminate class distinction and boost overall student morale, many students feel that school uniforms are a bother and a major fashion killer.
However, governmental studies have shown that school uniforms are beneficial in reducing overall violence, sexual harassment, vandalism and more, making school uniforms part of a solution to keep crime low.
District officials from Long Beach, California, found that in the year following the implementation of a school uniform policy throughout their elementary and middle schools, "overall school crime decreased 36 percent, fights decreased 51 percent, sex offenses decreased 74 percent, weapons offenses decreased 50 percent, assault and battery offenses decreased 34 percent, and vandalism decreased 18 percent," according to the Department of Education website for school uniforms.
In addition, less than one percent of the parents agreed to have their children opted out of the school uniform policy. In most cases, school uniforms have greatly increased the amount of positive attitudes while greatly decreasing the negative side effects of crime throughout the schools.
The usual school uniform includes khakis (pants or skirts), polos, belts, camis for girls, undershirts for boys, with ties, vests and additional clothing, with accessory pieces being optional. However, most students feel that their personality is being squelched by being required to wear boring school uniforms.
To help combat the lack-of-personality problem, students can accessorize their uniforms as much as their schools allow. Necklaces and bracelets are generally accepted within reason, so if your child or teen is struggling to personalize their uniform, try cute new necklaces or bracelets.
Even males can wear leather and hemp necklaces and bracelets, which are hip for any male, regardless of age. Recent fashion trends for teens have thrown thin rubberized or plastic bracelets into the spotlight. Many of these bracelets are allowed in schools and display organizations, clubs, bands and sayings that are generally accepted within the parameters of school uniforms.
Look into specific uniform regulations, and make sure you purchase the right uniform pieces including polos, belts, camis for girls, girls necklaces, boys necklaces, ties, vests, and khakis. Do not let your child be down in the dumps about wearing the same color and style as everyone else with a school uniform. Choose to accessorize as much as your child's school will allow and customize their look to create an individual feel while upholding school uniform rules.
