Do-follow links and no-follow links

One of the most important SEO factors is link-building. It may be THE most important. There are two types of links across the internet: Do-follow links and no-follow links. No-follow links tell the search engine not to follow the link, and does not provide much value towards your site. Do-follow links instruct the search engine to follow the link, thus providing plenty of value to your site. The amount of value you get from a link depends on various parameters. How high PageRank does the site that links to you have? Are both the pages about a certain subject?

A link from a high PageRank car-site will provide a lot of value towards your site - especially if it's a car site. A link from your aunt's private photo gallery hosted on Blogger.com will provide very little to no value to your site. Being active on respected forums with a signature link to your site is a great way to build links, for example. Every do-follow link to your site is like a recommendation. The more recommendations you have from various sites, the more authority is given to you by Google.

One thing you should avoid is duplicate content. If Google, or another search engine, finds the same content on two different pages, one of these pages will be punished. Hopefully the site who stole the content will be punished. However that's not always the case. Google is amazing, but Google can't track what site specific content were first uploaded to.

Once you've done the basic SEO stuff be sure to continually link-build and update your site with fresh content. If there's one thing that search engines love, it's fresh content! Fresh content tells the search engine that your site is still active, and is able to provide value towards the reader. With fresh content and link-building, your site will start ranking in no time.

Do everything you can to help Google. Google will return the favor!

Best of luck on your journey
