Thinking of remodeling your kitchen and/or bathrooms?  Building a new home and trying to decide what kitchen and bathroom countertops to use?  Well, as you have probably found out, there are many different types of countertops out there from formica to solid surface to recycled or reclaimed material.

I want to suggest that you consider the recycled and reclaimed countertops materials which will not only look nice in your home, but will help the environment out as well.  There are many types of recycled and reclaimed countertops to choose from, so the question now becomes, “Which countertop do I choose and how can I find them and compare them?”.

Here are five different examples of recycled and/or reclaimed countertops for you to think about as you try to make the important decision for your home.

1.The Craft-Art Wood Company makes countertops out of bamboo as well as from a variety of reclaimed wood species.  The bamboo is Teragren Bamboo and is made from a sustainably harvested bamboo forest in China.  The reclaimed wood species come from many different types of buildings including old barns and textile mills.  In addition they have reclaimed wood from pickle and vinegar vats (check for availability).  If you like the look of distressed wood (wood that looks old) then this is the countertop for you.  They will even distress the wood for you if it happens to be in excellent condition or you can get it as is.  Check out their website for more information  www.craft-art.com .

2.IceStone LLC makes a solid surface countertop out of 100% recycled glass mixed with cement which creates a highly durable product.  The countertop is made with Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) free ingredients and comes in a wide variety of colors which can complement any kitchen or bathroom.  This product has also achieved the highly coveted Cradle to Cradle™ Gold certification which means that the product is ideal for helping you achieve “green” status or LEED certification for you project.  Check out the website to learn more about the product at www.icestone.biz .

3.Renewed Materials LLC makes a countertop called Alkemi.  Alkemi is a polyester based composite surfacing material that contains approximately 60% recycled soft alloy aluminum scrap flake fillers.  This scrap is commonly burnt up as a heavy smoke pollutant when exposed to conventional aluminum recycling.  The product comes in a variety of colors as well as different surface treatments.  Check out their website at www.renewedmaterials.com for more information on their product and company.

4.Trinity Mountain Innovations has created a product out of fibrous-cement material comprised of recycled paper, recycled glass, coal fly-ash and cement.  This product is called Squak Mountain Stone and comes in 5 different colors.  It comes in 1 ½” thick solid surface material or in ¾” tiles.  Visit www.squakmountainstone.com to learn more about the product.

5.ShetkaWorks LLC has a product called shetkaSTONE which is a solid surface countetop that is made from pre and post consumer waste paper.  Once the product has achieved its useful life cycle, there is no need to put it in a landfill since it can be recycled all over again back into a new countertop.  The product comes in a variety of colors and is shipped finished and ready to install.  Visit www.shetkastone.com for more information.

As you can see, there is a variety of recycled and reclaimed products out there and what is mentioned above is just a small sample.  Research the manufacturers to determine which one meets your requirement for being green and most importantly meets your requirements to make your kitchen and bathroom into your dream room!
