You can use flood barriers to help reduce the quantity of damage you sustain in a flood. They can help to keep water from entering your home, and can give you a layer of defense when a flood happens. Many of these can be put into place as they are needed, and therefore do not have to ruin the beauty of your home.

One of the main areas you want to protect is your doors. These often are the weakest part of the house during a flood. You can choose from many types and styles of barriers to keep the water out. You will need to determine the type you want based on your physical capabilities, the amount of time it would take for you to implement them, and the flood danger itself.

Waterproof doors can be a good option. A waterproof door can be used. This type has a small tube running around the door. These still can allow some water to come in and are not fully water tight, but you need not be at home for this to work.

You can also choose to get a gasket that is permanently installed to the door and inflated by a hand pump or air compressor as it is needed, making it slightly better then a water proof door, but it will require you to be available to inflate the gasket.

Also offered are external barriers that you can place in front of your door. You can choose to have the frame affixed to your house for quick installation of the boards, or you can get one that does not require the frame. These will not cover the whole door, and often will only come up no more then halfway but are available in many widths for ease of assembly.

When you decide on these barriers, you should also remember to get one for your garage. These are just like the ones for the doors and will install in the same way. If you have a patio or walkway, then you may want a portable barrier for those to help block water from getting into these areas as well.

Windows can also be protected with a glass flood barrier. When they are used, these windows offer a flexible solution that will not shatter under the water pressure, making your home safe from broken glass during the cleanup. These do allow for some water to enter through the frame, so they are not considered watertight.

Aluminum barriers can also be a great defense against flooding. These are plates of metal that have a welded frame which are assembled to cover the entire perimeter of the house. While these give the best, and most, protection to your home, they are also cost prohibitive to most people, and the installation can be extremely difficult.

You can effectively use Flood Barriers to decrease the amount of damage your home sustains during a flood. While they cannot prevent all the water from gaining access to your house, they can greatly reduce the amount that gets in. Many of Flooding Barriers can be installed simply and quickly which can help decrease the cost of repairs later.
