Wherever you are traveling to, to grandma's house, the river, the beach, Disney Land, or even the in-laws, you can learn how to save on food while traveling. Some simple ideas and tips will keep more cash in your pocket to buy Grandma a gift, a fishing pole of the river, some sunscreen at the beach, and some chill out remedies for being at your in-laws all weekend. Asides for the dollar menu at your local fast food restaurants, here are some more money saving tips:

Brown Bag It

Of course the most common way to cut your food expenses while traveling is to brown bag it. Take some sandwiches, chips, snacks, or whatever it is you like to eat. If you are brown bagging it, make sure what ever you are putting in that bag is at least semi-nonperishable. Meaning, I sure wouldn't pack any fish in the brown bag.

Taking food with you is one of the most common ways to save money while you are traveling or brown bagging it at work to save money. But, as I said, I would not suggest fish or anything similar if you don't have a cooler. Those types of smells linger and the money you saved by brown bagging it will only be absorbed by the cost of air fresheners!

Bring a Cooler

Enjoy the sound of the ice slushing in the cooler as you travel. You can fit many different things in an ice cooler; depending on it's size and the amount of space you have available to bring it with you. If you are going to be on a long journey and you want to save money, I highly suggest making some room for the cooler.

You can pack cold cuts, cold drinks, and so much more in a cooler. Instead of spending a couple of dollars on a soft drink while you are traveling, you can reach back in your cooler and get a drink you brought from home that is at a fraction of the gas station cost.

Use Coupons

Search the internet for restaurants along your travel path. Some may have websites that you can print coupons from. Saving 15% or getting a deal like a "buy one get one free" is a great way to save on food while traveling. It will also give you a chance to get out and stretch your legs and relax a while before heading back out on your excursion.

Traveling By Plane

If you want to save on food while traveling on an airplane your options are a bit more limited than traveling by your own personal vehicle. You need to check the airlines rules and regulations on what types of food or drink are available on board. Generally they aren't. But, you could always brown bag it and leave it in your other luggage.

That way once you pick up your luggage you can grab some food you brought with you instead of spending so much at the airport. Also, check your flights and see if there are any discounts on meals, etc. If your trip isn't going to take long, eat at home before you leave.

Cook Your Own Food
Buying food at the grocery store and cooking it yourself is usually cheaper than eating at restaurants. You can stay at extended stay hotels or hostels - they usually have cooking facilities. As a bonus, you will also save money staying at extended stay hotels or hostels versus regular hotels.

You have so many options of how to save on food while traveling. The easiest way to save money on food is when you are traveling in your own car. When you travel this way you have more space and the ability to actually bring food and drink in with you. If you have the space for even a small ice cooler in your vehicle, that will save several bucks on soft drinks at rest stops and gas stations.
