The dress codes you choose for your work place should make you look and appear smart, protected and well groomed. There is probably no correlation between performance at work and appearance, but once subconscious judgements are made it is hard to alter them.

Looking smart and well-groomed provides an aura of efficiency and trustworthiness. The well-dressed can get away with more than the sloppily-presented. Create an impression of togetherness and you have a head start over those less concerned with their appearance.

This is how to make a dress code decision:

1.      Learn the dress code

A good starting point in a new job is to stick to what you wore for the interview until you've had a chance to look at how different people in your organization dress. You may not like being told what to wear, but it is often simpler than having to decide for yourself.

Those working in places with a uniform or a clear dress code have it easy. Where the choice of clothes is entirely up to you, don't be fooled. There is still a dress code in operation but you have to decipher it first.

2.      Identify with a group

Allow yourself to make judgements of others on the basis of the clothes they are wearing. After that it's up to you to decide which group you would like to identify with. If you're someone who cannot resist defying rules, aim to do so with a sense of humour rather than as an act of anger.

There's a secret pleasure to be had in confining individuality to what can't be easily seen on the surface.
