What's the one trait that almost every highly successful person you know exhibits? Your immediate reaction might be "personality" or "intelligence."  But, in reality, it is that they have a high degree of discipline in doing what it takes to drive their business and careers. Discipline may mean different things to different people. Here, it means knowing what you  need to do to be successful and simply doing it.

In order to have the things you want, you must do the things others won't do

The first step is to determine what it is you need to do. Maybe you need to drive sales, get reports completed sooner, become more efficient in one aspect of your job or finish a project ahead of schedule. Whatever it is, you first need to quantify it. This is your end-state or goal.

Next comes planning. For most, this is where the process falls apart. I work with clients daily in my coaching programs who know where they want to go, but simply do not have a plan. Most people find this step daunting and do not take the time to develop a plan, much less stick with it. The end result: not achieving their goals.

Now is when discipline comes in. This is simply developing your plan and executing it daily.

For November, pick out an area in your job or career which you would like to see better results. Start with that end-state or goal and work backward. Break down the steps, working from the goal backward to where you sit right now. Next, take those steps and break them up into bite-size pieces each day. Make sure you document the steps and the smaller pieces. You can do this in a simple spreadsheet or a bullet list in Microsoft Word. It does not have to be a 10-page, double-spaced, professionally formatted plan, but you do need to outline it and track your progress. Now, spend time working on each piece, each day and you will not only achieve your goal, but now you can call yourself disciplined!
