The successes story Gujarat as an auto hub started when Ratan Tata, fed up of the political situation in Bengal shifted his multi-crore Tata Nano project to the state. Gujarat had already been attracting a lot of attention and investments from national and international businessmen as a result of the state leadership promoting the state as a ‘business friendly’ state. While businessmen had to bribe officials in other places to set up their operations, officials from Gujarat government adopted a proactive approach and contacted businessmen all round the globe and asked them to consider investing in Gujarat.

The coming of the prestigious Tata Nano project to Gujarat highlighted the business potential of the state to other Indian as well as multinational car companies, and this has created a number of auto (and ancillary) Jobs in Ahmedabad. The Tata Nano project has been set up in Saanand, just a few kilometers from the heart of Ahmedabad, and along with the huge car-manufacturing plant, a number of ancillary industries have developed.

The car companies prefer Gujarat as a manufacturing destination because of the ideal conditions for business: while strong labor unions who dictate terms to the industries exist in most other parts the country, Gujarat has never faced any major labor unrest problem. Also, the state has become the favorite destination for skilled laborers from all over the country and so there is no dearth of skilled labor in Gujarat. The combination of friendly government policies and availability of ideal employees has attracted more companies to Gujarat.

GM had established a car manufacturing plant in Gujarat way back in 1996, but other had not followed suit. But with Tata shifting project ‘Nano’ to Gujarat, the government also unleashed a marketing and publicity blitzkrieg through its various business meets, especially the Vibrant Gujarat events. Today, other car companies have started to set up their manufacturing operations in areas near Ahmedabad, creating a number of new jobs in Ahmedabad.

Maruti, one of India’s highest-selling cars is planning to open a car factory in Gujarat. The car giant aims to produce 2 million cars annually. Peugeot is also planning to set up a plant to manufacture mid-size sedans. After the Nano plant was set up in the state, 27 component makers also set up their operations in Gujarat. 15 more component makers are expected to arrive to meet the increasing requirements of the Tata Nano’s growing manufacturing abilities.

With more projects lined up, and the government aggressively marketing of areas around Ahmedabad as auto hubs, it is expected that a number of ancillary industries will develop around the car-manufacturing sector, creating a number of new jobs in Ahmedabad.

The realty sector in the state is also booming owing the government spending heavily on roads, bridges and other infrastructure, and this has also generation jobs for people living in Ahmedabad. Also, as a large number of professionals from other states frequently visit of live in the city, the hospitality industry of Ahmedabad has also received a much need impetus.
