Why Runes are Still Important

To answer this question we need to look at the evolution of the English language. We know the ancient Scandinavians spoke Old Norse as early as 800 BCE. This original language first evolved into East and West Norse then those derivations further evolved. The East Norse became modern Icelandic, Danish and Swedish.

The West Norse eventually evolved into modern Norwegian, Dutch, German and English. Through these variations of language the core ideologies remained intact through the generations. This occurred with the mythology passed down, everyday values, and letters used to represent the sounds.

In the simplest form, runes are the letters of the written forms of the old Scandinavian languages. As the West Norse evolved, it mingled with Latin and grew into Old, Middle, and Modern English. We can see this mingling looking at the modern English alphabet. About half of the letters in the English alphabet are of runic origin. For well over two centuries letters such as S, B, I, M, F, and H have remained virtually unchanged. Not only do these letters retain their shapes but their phonetic values as well. Many of our words have remained unchanged as well. Certain words carved in ancient rune stones are still readable by modern English speaking people. These are words such as Mother, Father, Brother and Sister.

The second important aspect of runes is that they carry an energy vibration. Like Hebrew and Sanskrit, each of the letters had a meaning and identity. Let us take the rune Fehu as en example. It is shaped like the letter F and carries the F phonetic value. In Old Norse, Fehu meant cattle. Cattle at that time period were a medium of exchange. The more cattle a person had, the richer they were.

As the languages and people evolved so to did the runes. The same rune shape of Fehu retained the F phonetic value but developed the name of Fe' (pronounced fay) which means fee. It is the same use of the word fee that we use today; something that must be paid. Again this has the connotations of a medium of exchange.

This value of monetary exchange is still an important value in today's society. While we may choose not to call this rune fee today, we certainly can choose to call it by a variety of other names. We simply need to understand that Fehu represents the energy of a medium of exchange. That exchange can be anything. It can be money, stock and bonds, time spent working, energy put into exercise, or any other thing that can be exchanged.

To get this rune to work for you, simply think of a situation where you know something must be exchanged. Now as you draw the shape of Fehu, think of this thing that must be exchanged. As you say the name of Fehu, visualize and feel the impact of our exchange item. You have now programmed three layers of your being to the energy of Fehu. Your conscious mind knows what the Fehu is and your subconscious mind feels the exchange happening. Runes are spiritual tools and your spiritual being becomes tuned to the energy of Fehu.

The last thing being affected is a temporal resonance. Because the F sound and the word Fehu has been used for centuries to mean a medium of exchange you are tapping into these ancient energies. All of those before you that uttered Fehu sing with you in a spiritual resonance of the great exchange energy. Simply saying Fehu, or the F sound with the intention of exchange opens you to the ancient spiritual practice known to the ancient Scandinavians.

Are runes still important today? Yes. They give us a means to connect, in a mult-level way, to the ways of the ancients. The values that were once spoken by these people are values still important to us today. This is their legacy passed on to us through the very words we use in the English (and other Germanic) language.

Our perception of reality is based on the language we speak, therefore the way we experience the values in our world is very similar to the ways of the ancients. Runes also tune our beings into these ancient energies. Energies that Norse Mythology tells us were created long before man or gods existed. Runes can bring into your reality the stuff you only once imagined was possible.
