The HP Color LaserJet 2550L printer is an inexpensive laser printer that has reached the end of its production by HP. This printer produces a large number of color prints. Although no longer available new, it can be found used in several places.

The machine is somewhat boxy and is two-tone gray. It is easy to move due to its lightweight and compact size. The size was made possible through the use of a carousel arrangement of the toner cartridges.

The low initial cost is the greatest advantage of this printer. Even when purchased new, it was one of the least expensive color laser printers for its day. To lower costs, HP designed the machine to be adjusted through the software rather than install an LCD screen in the printer.

This particular printer did bring about some complaints. First, the lack of a paper tray and second the cost and number of consumables that the machine required.

The machine does not come equipped with a paper tray. While the tray was available as an option, it was often difficult to find. Using the machine without the paper tray means that the front panel must be left open to feed the paper through a slot. This could allow dust inside the printer.

The drum of the HP Color LaserJet 2550L printer has to be replaced very often. For some consumers, the drum needs replacing every six months. The replacement drum cost about one third the cost of the machine when new.

While it is to be expected that toner cartridges would need to be regularly replaces, these cartridges indicate their use by means of a counter. The cartridges had a certain number of pages that they were expected to print and with each print the counter clicked down.

Even when the user chose black only prints, the color toner counters continued to click down. This meant that the cartridges were often over half full when the machine insisted that they be replaced to continue printing. There are rumors of a replacement chip that allows the remaining toner to be used in the machine.

Prints on this machine also seem to be mediocre. Additionally, the speed seems very slow by the standards of today. The fastest speed, for black letter sized prints is 12.1 ppm. Color prints are only done a t 3.1 ppm. In addition, color often needs adjustment to get true color for the pictures. The machine does shine at black prints. It consistently produces clean and crisp text.

The biggest advance of the HP Color LaserJet 2550L printer was to lower the price barrier. This printer set a standard that made laser printers more affordable for most users. Small businesses and some homes began to make the switch from ink jet printers. Today, you will find many laser printers that are available in the same price range you would expect to pay for a used 2550l. They will offer more affordable consumables and better prints than were ever available on the HP Color LaserJet 2550L printer. You will need to have plenty of HP toner to continue printing. Toner cartridges are not only available in stores, but online also. To get the best deal on your HP Color LaserJet 2550L toner, you probably want to shop online.
