If your office or workgroup needs a dependable black printer, one of the machines from the HP LaserJet 5100 printer family may be a good choice. There are three printers in this family. The basic model is the HP LaserJet 5100 printer using HP LaserJet 5100 toner.

The 5100tn and the 5100dtn are the other models. The latter two models offer some upgrades that can be added later to the 5100 model, as well as some features that are not available as upgrades.

The HP LaserJet 5100 printer is equipped with 16 MB of SDRAM. The upgraded models have 32 MB of RAM as standard equipment. All three models include three memory slots that can be used to bring the total internal memory to 192 MB. A 10 GB hard drive can also be installed. The printers depend on a 300 MHz processor to operate.

The base model comes equipped to handle 350 sheets of paper. Its multipurpose tray will hold 100 sheets of paper and standard tray 250 sheets of paper. A second 250 sheet tray can be added to bring the total capacity of this machine to six hundred sheets.

The upgraded models can have these same capacities; however a standard 500 sheet paper tray is included so they can hold a total of 1,100 sheets of paper. These options mean you can spend less time changing paper to get the size you need for your prints.

Preventative maintenance on these printers is encouraged. HP offers kits to help keep the machine operating at peak performance. These kits include both a roller kit as well as a maintenance kit.

All three printers in this family are black printers. They do not offer a color option. However, the first print will be produced in less than a quarter of a minute. Additional copies of the print are made at 21 ppm. The monthly print cycle is 65,000 pages.

If you own the base model or the 5100tn model, duplex printing is not available unless you add the duplex unit as a option. This unit is standard on the 5100dtn machine. A wide range of papers are accepted in the printer that range from a three by five index card size to a tabloid 11 x 17 sheet of paper. Card stock is no problem nor is extra light weight paper. In addition, the machine will accept vellum, transparencies, bond or inexpensive copier paper.

When these machines were sold new they were designed to operate with Windows XP. They also worked with previous Windows OS. Transition to Vista or Windows 7 should be smooth. The printer is able to communicate with computers using AutoCAD. There is little distortion in the prints and the maximum resolution is at 1,200 dpi. This is a excellent printer for prints from drafting teams.

The HP LaserJet 5100 printer family was introduced several years ago using some of the most innovative technology available from HP at the time. They offered excellent paper handling and great quality prints.

The speed is not the fastest available from HP today, but still an acceptable 21 ppm. The printer is equally at home in a general office environment as it is with drafting and design teams or finance teams. It produces black prints that are of the highest quality and prints on several sizes of media. This printer is an economical choice for many work groups.

The prints produced by the HP LaserJet 5100 toner are exactly what you would expect with any printer using HP toner. Crisp, clean, and exactly what you need to show your professionalism. The toner used really can make a difference to your bottom line.
