We all know who CompTIA is and of course we've all heard of the Department of Defense (DOD). IT Professionals, such as you and I, are constantly studying or learning something new whether we want to learn or not.  If you hold certifications from CompTIA, you know that these certifications never expire.

CompTIA in their ever continuing strive to stay current with the IT industry as can be seen with changes in the A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications in the last few years.

The newest of these changes was with Security+2008.  As you may have read in an article written by Gudrun Funk, is the new little twist the "bridge exam" from CompTIA.  This really is no different than the "transition exams" from Microsoft.

But what is DOD Directive 8570.1?

To give you a brief and I do mean very brief summary of this directive.  This directive provides guidance that all personnel working with the DOD must have and maintain specific certifications to in order to be hired or maintain their IT position(s).

In the brief summary you just read above, you read "must have and maintain specific certifications."  So, you're now thinking so what?  Well the why do I care.  Knowing that in most cases what the government does on their own once even twice.   That corporate America will soon follow once the government has worked out the bugs.

Now the real fun begins!  As CompTIA releases a new version of any exam, the IT professional wanting to keep their certification "current", will do so by completing a bridge exam.
