Personal Trainer Marketing: Waiting For The January Client Rush?

As personal trainers, it can be very easy at this time of year to expect a rush of new clients at the beginning of January. In the fitness industry normally it will get busier at this time of year but there is always a little bit fo a risk of "expecting" things to happen.

The reason I make this point is because I have thought this myself! It is a risk because if we expect that a load of clients are going to want personal training at the start of the year and things don't happen as quick, this could damage both our confidence and also our personal trainer business.

The key question I would ask is this, what work have you done over December to set the scene for the New Year? What marketing tactics have you employed in order to generate interest in your personal training business? If we look at large corporate gyms, they started doing a lot of work at the beginning of December. The advertising about free months and cheap deals way in advance. If you are a free lance personal trainer and don't work in a gym, if clients sign up to a gym for 12 months, the chances of them paying for a personal trainer outside of this are reduced I would imagine.

This is why getting in early is important instead of waiting. This is also true of the times when people generally look to hire personal trainers as well. People get paid at the end of month usually so they may not look to do anything until the end of January. This makes preparation even more important when it comes to the coming New Year.

The good news is that December isn't finished yet so if you are running your own personal training business, the next few days could be vital in making sure you have a good start to the year instead of being disappointed that your new client expectations weren't met.
