The expectations on personal trainers are fairly high. I have seen many personal fitness trainers suffer because of the inability to manage conflict. In this article I will give some practical advice on preventing and dealing with client conflict.

I believe conflict arises when expectations are not clearly defined. This can stem from personal trainers trying so hard to get clients, they will agree to unrealistic goals. If for example a personal training client wishes to lose 14 pounds in three weeks, this is achievable but the potential effort required may be a lot greater than the client expects. If this isn't discussed with the client at point of first meeting, the chances of conflict arising later are greatly enhanced.

The other main reason for conflict is money, whether you have a job as a personal trainer or you running a personal training business, the ability to deal with money situations is a very important skill. I find the mot common problem that personal fitness trainers face is "haggling" with clients about price. Lets be honest, person training is a luxury item.

It becoming more and more affordable but it is still a luxury item. If set a price with a client at the start, chances they are going to want that price in the future. If you have a compelling offer for example, that's fine but it must be clearly stated if that offer is introductory. If you find yourself having a conflict with a client later because of this, this doesn't bode well for your personal training business and your image.

In a results orientated business like personal training, the last thing you want to do is just take peoples money and hope for the best. This runs the risk of conflict and negative publicity for your business. Good positive feed back is a great for personal training marketing and by getting results and managing expectations, you can avoid conflict and get fantastic testimonials.
