Productivity is the buzz word in business today. Technology and enhanced systems help your employees do more with less manpower. Like it or not, a company's productivity will be the key to survival and enhanced profitability. Strategic rewards should be part of your incentive program and sometimes expressing your appreciation with something other than money reaps a better return.

Of course an employee's compensation is the main way to keep score as to how he or she is doing and how much they are appreciated, but sometimes a gift touches a warm place in  their hearts that gets remembered in a different and fonder way. For example, sometimes a single rose expresses love more powerfully than an expensive gift.

In these difficult economic times, with salary and bonus caps in place, employee gifts may be the only avenue left to say a special thanks. Even when you have no budget for employee incentives, there are freebies that can be utilized. Grant an employee flex time, in lieu of a fixed schedule, and you will see how this can be a huge morale booster.

A handwritten note on a nice thank you card can do the job. Expand your employee's universe, let them meet suppliers or vendors that they haven't interacted with, welcome their enthusiasm and make them feel important. Occasionally, hand out a free pass for one day off work for being a good employee and team player, they will never forget that gift of extra time off with pay. The wall of fame is another great option. Set aside a wall in a public area with photos and tributes for special recognition of employees.

Moving up from the cost free price point you can consider some of the traditional gifts. Plaques, trophies, engraved pen and pencil sets, coasters and fancy bookends. Don't forget the wonderful array of intangible rewards. There are spa days and paid in full weekends at a resort. How about tickets to sporting events or dinner for the employee and spouse with their manager and spouse?

If your employee has young children, give them a knowledge based toy, this will really show your thoughtfulness.  For teen children mp3 players and portable Nintendo type devices are always a hit. A rising trend in business is to give favored employees smart phones; encourage them to use it to increase work productivity. Depending on your budget, laptops, I-Pads, and digital readers are hot items.

A budget friendly item that every employee will welcome is any type of picture frame. No one ever has too many. They can be found in crystal, bamboo, silver, metal, and wood in all sizes and price ranges. Whatever ideas you choose to go with when rewarding employees, make sure to develop a plan and also track the performance of the employees.

You want to be careful not to overlook one productive employee for another because this can have a deleterious effect on morale. Depending on the size of your company, systems may need to be in place so your kind efforts don't backfire!
