Passport Renewal - It's Easy!

You may find that you need to obtain a passport to prove your citizenship or to travel outside of the country. They are not hard to renew, but be aware it can take several weeks to process. You will need to apply for a passport renewal if your name changes or you no longer have your passport through loss, theft or damage or if it is expiring.

You need to be aware of the time involved in getting one, especially if you are planning on traveling soon. Many countries require the passport to be issued at least 6 months from the time of entry into their country. You also want to make sure you are at no risk of it expiring while you are gone since it can make travel and leaving the country hard, as well as causing problems trying to reenter the US.

You may mail your passport renewal if you meet a list of criteria. This is a very easy solution. If you were over the age of 16 when it was issued, it was issued in the last 15 years, is in the name you legally have and have it available to be mailed with the paperwork, then mail is an option got you.

If the above does not apply to you, then you need to go to a facility and do it face to face. You will also have to do this if you were under 16 when you got your passport, your name has changed, and it is your first one. You also need to do this if you are unable to locate your current passport due to any reason.

If you do mail your application, then you need to make sure you include your passport in the envelope. You should make sure that the package is protected from the elements since they will not accept any damage to it at all and that you have a way of tracing it through the mail. You also must send this from the US ands have a return one in the States or Canada.

You may have to go to an agency, and you need to make sure that you have all the documentation they require. It may include your social security card and birth certificate. Have all the paperwork filled out and wait for the agent to indicate when to sign the forms.

Fees must be paid at the time you apply for the renewal with either method. If you mail it, be sure to include payment as part of your paperwork, and have the funds available at your interview in person. Fees, locations of agencies, and addresses to mail and forms are available from the government website.
