Getting A New Passport Can Be Quick And Easy
Regardless of the type of passport-related transaction you're going to do, you should always make it a point to know the requirements on getting a new passport. This is important because knowing what you need to do beforehand helps you save a lot of time.
It becomes even more important when you need to make a personal appearance at the passport office. You don't want to travel there only to waste half of your time trying to figure out what to do next.
We'll show you how to get your first passport, renew your expired passport, and apply for a passport card. That sounds a lot of stuff you need to learn about, but don't worry, as we'll keep things as simple as possible. So read on and learn more.
When applying for your first passport, you will have to fill in Form DS-11. You will also be required to submit other supporting documents along with this form. One such document is your proof of citizenship.
Anyone applying for a passport for the first time should establish his/her American citizenship. There are particular documents you can submit to do this, such as your birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, certificate of citizenship, or a consular report on your birth if you were born abroad.
You may submit any of these documents for your passport application. They will then be returned to you once you receive your passport, although they may be mailed separately. In addition to the DS-11 and your proof of citizenship, you have to provide an ID when you submit your documents in person.
Also have a photocopy of the ID and attach it with the other documents that were previously mentioned. Then there are also the two required color passport photos. Submit them as well. Once you have accomplished all the requirements, you may now pay the applicable fees.
From first time passport applications, we move on to passport renewals. You need to renew your passport as soon as it expires, and as soon as you need it. To renew your expired passport, you have to accomplish and mail Form DS-82. However, if you are currently based abroad, you could also send it to your nearest US embassy and consulate. They will then handle the renewal of your passport.
Finally, there's the passport card. You can use the passport card when traveling to these Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative areas: Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. If you currently have a US passport, or at least were a previous passport holder, then you can apply for a passport card by mail. Simply fill in Dorm DS-82 then send it by mail. Otherwise, you will have to submit the DS-11 form in person.
Simply put, you'll only need two types of passport forms when applying for a new passport. You have to use the DS-11 if you are getting a passport for the first time, along with the other required documents. On the other hand, use the DS-82 if you are renewing your expired passport. Follow the same instructions when applying for US passport card.
