One of the most common procedures used to treat breast cancer is a mastectomy.  In this procedure a surgeon would remove the tissue, including the tumor or cancerous cells, from one or both breasts.

Mastectomies are far more common in Europe than they are in the United States.  Over 77% of people diagnosed with breast cancer in Europe undergo a mastectomy, in the United States it is only about 56%.

Breast cancer can have a very high success rate of recovery and is considered extremely treatable, but it is important to acknowledge that it can still be a deadly condition.  By performing regular self exams and detecting changes in your breasts early you have a very high chance of finding a problem early and getting the treatment you need to make a full recovery. For this reason, all women should perform regular breast exams to make sure they are healthy.

Just a few years ago in 2004 a study was conducted that reported approximately 216,000 cases of breast cancer in the United States.  Of those people, about 40,000 of the cases were fatal.  The success rate of surviving breast cancer has a very large range, from 10% to 98%. This is completely up to you, by examine yourself regularly and knowing your procedure options you can sway your success rate in your favor.

Breast cancer is over 100 times more likely to occur in a woman than in a man, even though both men and women can be diagnosed with breast cancer.  This is just another reason all women should conduct their own home exams one a regular basis.

Regular self exams is the only way you can help your doctor detect breast cancer early. If you do develop breast cancer, the best thing you can do for yourself is to be aware of all of the treatment options available to you.
