The 4050 is part of Hewlett-Packard's 4000 series of printers. In general, printers and this series are workhorses, and the 4050 is no exception. It can be upgraded with many options and capabilities, including more memory if needed. In terms of print speed, a purchaser can expect about 17 pages of product to come out in a single minute, which is more than adequate for most workgroup demands.

One can connect the 4052 to a workgroup or even to a single computer via wired technology, including a parallel port and a serial interface port. As well, there are several different slots, which can be filled with a wireless or Ethernet capability. Combined with everything else that the computer can do, this extra functionality is quite appreciated by most printer customers deciding on just what model to go for.

As far as the quality of the printed page that will emerge from the 4050, most people would say that it is excellent in all characteristics. This is because the 4050 is equipped with the ability to print at 1200 dots per inch resolution. This means that the product will be sharp, rich and very detailed. In fact, this particular printer probably has a lead over many of its competitors solely because of this fact.

Memory is adequate enough at 8 MB of RAM, though that can be increased with little trouble up to 200 MB of RAM. Hewlett-Packard has determined that most workgroup users or even personal users are fine with 8 MB, but a serious workgroup may want to look at the memory and improve it. Just have the local IT folks bring it in and gas it up in order to improve its memory capabilities.

The HP 4050 is no piker when it comes to how many sheets of paper it can hold. It has a single auto load input tray that can hold 500 sheets and an additional 100 sheets can be inserted via a manual slot. It's also quite versatile in the kinds and sizes of media stock that it can print on. This includes custom sizing, transparencies and envelopes as well as standard plain paper.

The monthly duty cycle rating for the 4050 is an excellent 65,000 pages. This means that the printer will need no maintenance until it has met or exceeded 65,000 pages of printed product in a month or over a predetermined timeframe. Since it has such a nice duty cycle at such a low price, it stands out from its peers. Additionally, it runs off of several different Windows platforms.
