Background checks are conducted for numerous reasons. These may include applying for a job or an apartment. A background check for a job may be a very basic investigation or it may be in-depth. A military job position may require an intensive background check.

Most background checks are conducted in a very similar manner. Checks conducted for a job are typically very similar. If an employer is contemplating hiring someone for a job they may desire to do a check before deciding to hire the individual for the job.

The majority of background checks conducted as part of a hiring process are rather basic. The employer will usually start off by checking with the previous employer of the applicant. They probably want to know if the applicant actually worked for the employer they listed and they may also desire to know if the applicant would be rehired if they returned.

Naturally, an employer is going to want to know if an applicant would make a good employee for their company. This is often based on whether the applicant is someone their previous employer would hire again. It is a good indicator of an applicant's work ethic if the applicant's previous employers are willing to rehire them. That indicates that the applicant left that employer on a good note and consequently would most likely make a good employee on a new job.

Basic background checks can be a little limiting on how much information they provide for the hiring employer. There are regulations pertaining to what a previous employer can tell potential employers about an applicant. In the case that there are not regulations, many previous employers may be a little unwilling to divulge too much information about their prior employees.

In the case that a hiring employer wants to know more information about an applicant, the next step they will typically take is to contact the applicant's personal references. Many applications have a place on them for an applicant to list personal references. This list will most likely be comprised of friends and possibly ex-fellow employees. In most cases the application will specify that the applicant must list non-relatives they have known for at least three years.

Personal references can be a reliable part of the background check if they are reputable people who are known in the community. If the references are simply people twho are friends of the applicant, they may not be that reliable. If references are just friends, they are likely to say anything about their friend that will help that individual get a job.

It is also likely that an employer may desire to do a credit check as a part of the background check. A credit check indicates the financial habits of the applicant. This can be very important for a position that may require the individual to handle sums of money. This is a common part of a background check for banks and lending institutions where the employees have access to large sums of money.

A criminal check may also be a part of the background screening for employment. Many employers will want to know if the applicant has served any time in jail or if they have a criminal record. This can be good information to have, but there are regulations that may prevent an employer from denying employment based on a criminal past.
